Power Output and Generation

The Westinghouse WH 5500 gas powered portable generator can deliver 5500 watts of continuous power while being able to surge up to 6750 watts.

It is powered by a 357 cc engine which runs at 3600 rpm. This is not an electric start model and currently that is for 6500W and above WH models.

As with all the bigger WH units the engine uses an overhead valve design for best performance. The design is very durable utilizing the cast iron cylinder sleeves, forged pistons and connecting rods. This reduces overall oil consumption by having a strong engine design..

The rated output at 5500 watts AC, and in the twist outlet (NEMA L14-30R) you can get 3600 W at 120V and at 240V 23 amps provides the full 5500W.

Utilizing Each duplex outlet set (NEMA 5-20R) the 120V at 20 Amp is 2400W each for a total of 4800W. combining the L5 sets and L14 outlet at 120V will allow you to use all 5500W. (Learn about Plugs)

Total load is limited to 45 amps for a combination of all the 120V plugs (5 total) and 23 amps for full use in the 240V mode.

Westinghouse’s VR (volt regulation) System is a top performer for voltage regulation and power quality. It helps control surge capability so the lights won’t flicker when other appliances kick in.

Fuel Type and Noise Levels:

The Westinghouse WH 5500 portable generator uses regular unleaded gasoline as fuel and has a large fuel tank which can hold 6.6 gallons of fuel. This tank lets the generator run at 50% load for up to 14 hours.

Oil: For the 4 stroke engine there is no mixing of gas and oil. The engine crane case is 1.05 quarts (1L) of 10W30 oil which comes with the generator. You’ll need to pick up more for that first oil change. An oil funnel comes with the unit to add oil easily; the oil fill is tucked up near a wheel next to the frame.

A low oil shutdown switch is part of the engine protection.

Noise:

Advertized as one of the quietest operations on the market the Pulse-Flo muffler is an over-sized muffler and catalyst. No published measurements have been given for noise, however, customers of these generators indicate it is quieter than other models of the same size.
