Powermate PM 0435005 with Subaru Engine

Powermate PM 0435005 w Subaru Engine

This post compares two Powermate Generator configurations at the 5000/6250W output range. Those generators are:

Powermate PM0435005, 6250 Watt 287cc 10HP Subaru EX30 Gas Powered Portable Generator and the Powermate PM0105007 Vx Power Series 6250 Watt 389cc Gas Powered Portable Generator. These units are not CARB compliant. However, there are a couple of Powermate models that are, see similar generators below for specific units.

Powermate PM015007 Vx Power Series

Powermate has been one of the leading brands of generators and power equipment for the past 40 years. They are known all over the world for their products. Powermate generators are designed and tested to be of the highest standard and only the best component parts are used in their manufacture.

All Powermate generators are equipped with world class engines from Honda, Mitsubishi, Pramac, Subaru and Yamaha.

These generators are designed and manufactured to give you dependable and reliable service for a long time.

The significant difference here is in the engine used to power the two models as there is a 100cc difference in size, and decidedly different engine manufactures with the smaller engine from Subaru and the larger one from Pramac. There are other differences as well, we will pursue the various aspects of each below.

Power Output and Generation

Both models are rated to produce 5000 watts of continuous power while being able to surge up to 6250 watts. Neither has electronic start and use recoil rope method to start the units. See Similar Generators below for models with electric start.

The Powermate PM0435005 Gas powered portable generator is equipped with a 287cc 10HP Subaru EX30 engine which features a cast iron sleeve. Feedback on this smaller engine indicates that it’s industrial grade and does the job very well and with less noise.

The Powermate PM0105007 Vx Power Series gas powered portable generator has a 13HP Pramac 389cc engine which also has a cast iron sleeve. At this size the engine has a bigger piston size to produce the power output and preforms nicely.

Given the different engine sizes that can provide adequate power there is a difference in efficiency in design for output. However, in either case both units perform acceptably. Fuel usage will be compared below.

Plug configuration:

NEMA L14 Receptacles

NEMA L14 Receptacles

The Subaru powered PM0435005 has a very basic plug configuration of 2 sets of duplex 120V 5-20R outlets and one 120V L14-20R twist lock outlet (20 amp or 2400W).

In comparison the PM0105007 Vx model allows a larger 30 amp twist lock with a L14-30R and adds a 12VDC outlet for charging batteries.

Of course with the configuration, all plugs can be used up to the circuit breaker amounts and the max output of 5000W. Given the plug/circuit breaker restrictions you will only get a max 4800W from the Subaru machine.

Fuel Type and Noise Levels:

Both generators uses gasoline as fuel.

8 Gallons

8 Gallons

The PM0435005 has a fuel tank with a capacity of 8 gallons which lets it run for 14.4 hours at 50% load capacity. The larger tank will allow longer run times without having to fill as often.

The Powermate PM0105007 Vx Power series portable generator also uses gasoline as fuel.

6.5 Gallons

6.5 Gallons

This generator is equipped with a fuel tank with a capacity of 6.5 gallons which lets it run for 11 hours at 50% load capacity.

Based on the half loading the Subaru engine burns about 0.556 gallons per hour and the Vx series burns about 0.59 gph. indicating the smaller engine is a bit more efficient on fuel usage with the Vx consuming about 1/2 cup of gas more per hour.

Noise:

The Subaru model produces 72.4 Db of sound when running which is on the loud side. The noise level of the Vx series generator has not been published, but all indications are that it is a similar noise level.

Dimensions and Weight

The Powermate PM435005 portable generator has overall dimensions of 29 x 21 x 25 inches ( L x W x H ) and it weighs in at 162 lbs.

The Powermate PM0105007 Vx Power series portable generator has overall dimensions of 31.7 x 23 x 22.8 inches ( L x W x H ) and it weighs in at 191 lbs.

Add gas at 6 lbs per gal, and the totals are 210 lbs. and 230 lbs. respectively. Both are going to be heavy to move around although the wheel kits will make it easier. Just know that with them fully loaded be careful and use help to move up slopes.

Generally the two generators have a similar footprint with Vx machine being longer and wider by a couple of inches, but slightly shorter as well.

Typical Uses and Needs

The Powermate PM435005 portable generator as well as the Powermate PM0105007 Vx Power series portable generator can produce 5000 watts of continuous power making them capable and able to run all the essentials in your home during power outages.

Equally both can be used as a backup power source. Both of them are portable which means that you can use them off the grid when you need electrical power.

Camping or to power the cabin in the woods and job site use are all good applications for moderate power needs.

Summary

Both models of generator here are good choices, but the differences may or may not have enough impact for you to choose one way or the other.

The Powermate PM0435005 portable gas powered generator is a basic generator which is equipped with a Subaru 287cc engine. This generator has 4 120 Volt 20 amp outlets and 1 120V/240V 20 amp outlet.

This generator is powerful enough to power a good portion of your home during power outages and can be used as a backup power source for your home. It can also be used as a source of electric power at a job site or anywhere you may need electricity.

Because it doesn’t have a 12Volt DC outlet nor does it have a 120V/240V 30 amp twist lock outlet it may not provide the extra power you may need on occasion and it is probably not a good use for your RV.

With a larger gas tank and moderate use it’s a more efficient unit and from all indications a very reliable generator in time of need.

The Powermate PM0105007 Vx Power Series gas powered portable generator can be easily used as a backup power source for your home to power most of your electrical needs during a power outage. This generator is equipped with a 12Volt DC out let as well as a 120V/240/ 30 amp outlet along with 4 120Volt 20 amp outlets which makes this an ideal generator to supply you with electricity wherever you may need it. It is ideal for camping or for use in your RV or even to power tools at your job site.
