Generac XG8000E Portable Generator

The Generac 5847 XG8000E is a home use portable generator at the 8000W level for whole house backup.

Since 1959 Generac has been manufacturing standby generators for home use along with engines designed specifically for powering these generators. Today Generac is known for their generators, they manufacture a wide line of generators for residential, commercial and industrial users. This XG8000E generator is one they manufacture for the home owner to use as a back up power source for their homes.

The reliable quality of power that this generator provides comes from its OHVI Generac engine designed specifically for generators and to give you a long service life.

As a portable generator you can use it wherever you may need electric power, be it for events, camping or a job site or even for tailgating parties.

The XG 5847 is not a CARB compliant model. But click here to see the Generac 5846 XG8000E CARB Compliant does meet requirements.

Generac Model: XG5847:

Power Output and Generation

The Generac 5847 XG8000E gas powered portable generator is provided with a Generac 410 cc OHVI engine which lets it produce 8000 watts of continuous power while being able to surge up to 10000 watts.

The engine runs at 3600 rpm providing single phase 60 hz electrical output.

This model has an electric start and comes equipped with a 12VDC 10Ah battery. The battery does not charge while the generator is running and you must manually plug in a battery charger input to a specific jack to charge the battery using the generator.

The engine runs at a typical 3600 RPM and uses a full pressure lubrication unlike others that use splash lubrication and comes equipped with a oil filter. Oil recommendations are for straight 30W oil for conditions above 40°F expected operating temp. Below 40 degrees a 10W-30 down to 10°F is recommended and a synthetic oil below 10°F. There is a low oil shutdown with a delay for start up to allow oil pressure to build.

Also this model has a message to the hour meter that will indicate when the oil needs changing. This message displays for one hour prior and after the set time interval.

Electrical output:

This generator has a continuous supply power of 8000 watts. The following table shows maximum service based on circuit breaker capacity. The limiting output is 33.3/66.7 amps which allows total output to 8002 watts total for a combination of receptacles. Also note that elevation, temp, and fuel BTU will also decrease usable output.

Receptacle Amps Watts Notes
(0) 12 V DC     no DC output
(1) 120V 5-20R 20 2400 Duplex two outlets total 20A
(1) 120V 5-20R 20 2400 duplex GFCI outlet total 20A

L14-30RTo use the max continuous wattage you can use multiple receptacles. Here is an example of how that might work.

5-20A 1500

This represents a potential power use across all the outlets. Using full rated power should only be expected for short duration. A 50% load distribution should be considered for longer term use. Understanding your needs and distribution requirements you can easily manage your power requirements for powering your home or other dwellings.

Fuel Type and Noise Levels:

The Generac 5847 XG8000E portable generator runs on gasoline. It has a large fuel tank that can hold up to 9 gallons of fuel. This generator can run for up to 10 hours on one fuel tank at 50% load capacity.

Generac indicates that E85 or Methanol gas or gas with more than 10% ethanol should not be used. A regular unleaded gasoline should be used and they recommend against using a premium grade gasoline.

Generac didn’t indicate sound levels. I’ve ranted about this before on other reviews. and still think they could publish a 6 foot or 3 meter sound level data.

Reviewers didn’t heavily comment on noise, but those that did just indicated it was loud. However, one reviewer did indicate that compared to others of even smaller sizes that it is not as loud as those. Also that as it breaks in the mechanical noise lessens.

Dimensions and Weight

The overall dimensions of the Generac 5847 XG8000E portable generator are 31.5 x 25.5 x 28 inches ( L x W x H ) and it weighs in at 250 lbs.

This unit is in the typical dimensional range for this size generator. It does have a rotating handle to allow for moving and compact storage.

At 250 lbs. it’s still a bit daunting to move around, but with some careful planning the loading or loading off a pickup or trailer with ramps should be manageable.I’d still plan on using a couple of folks to move this unit about.

Typical Uses and Needs

The Generac 5847 XG8000E generator has a capacity to 8000 watts. It has a large gas tank (9 gals) and will run for up to 10 hours at 50% load capacity for each tank of gas.

With the reliable power that this generator can supply, it can supply your home with power for most of your electrical appliances. With its long run time it is an ideal generator to be used as a back up source of power for your home in times of power outages. It can also be used at your job site where you need to run power tools. Being portable means that you can take it for events, but would like to keep it isolated for noise control, as heavy as it is camping would not be an ideal choice. but for use it to power your appliances in your cabin and some noise block it could provide a good method of power..
