Champion Power Equipment 41135 – 5,500 Watt Portable Generator Review

Champion 3500W/4000W Generator

Champion 5500W/6800W Portable Generator

The Champion 5500/6800 Watt portable generator model 41135 is CARB compliant, mid-weight, fuel efficient, in a the full range 5500 running watt range. This model is not an electric start.

Portable gas generators let you have electricity wherever and whenever you need it. The advantage of portable generators is that you can move them to where you need electric power.

Champion Power Equipment 41135 is one such generator from an American company that stands behind its products through its commitment to quality throughout its manufacturing, quality assurance and customer service. Champion Power Equipment is known for dependable, durable and affordable power generators along with other power equipment like inverters, log splitters, winches and pressure washer transfer pumps.

Power Output and Generation

The Champion-Power-Equipment 41135 generator is capable of delivering 5,500 watts of continuous power while being able to surge up to 6,800 watts for starting power. This generator can run for 10 to 11 hours at 50% load capacity on a full tank of fuel.

This model is powered by a 338cc 4-stroke OHV engine. On this Champion model is a recoil start.

At a rated output fo 5500 watts AC, we reviewed the electrical diagram and you are restricted to 25 amp total on the circuit breaker and 20 amp for the duplex plugs.

For 2 sets of NEMA 5-20R (2 plugs per set) you have two ciruits each capable of 20 amp load. (2400 watts each, 4800 watts total). With the NEMA L14-30R. you can pull 25 amps in either 120V or 240V mode for plugs providing 3000W , but restricted at 5500 rated watts rather than the 6000W at full amps.

You can utilize all three circuits but will be limited by the individual 20 amp and 25 amp combination. At 120 V that’s a limitation of 3000W usable across the L14 and second N5 plug set. and then 2400W with the first N5 plug set. Total usable is 5400W.

Although you have the 5400W available the real restriction is going to be less than 5000W in practical terms.

There is no 12V DC configuration for this unit.

Fuel Type and Noise Levels:

The Champion-Power-Equipment 41135 generator runs on unleaded gasoline and has a fuel tank capacity of 5.9 gallons which lets it run for 10 to 11 hours at 50% load capacity. It does come with a fuel gauge which isn’t mentioned in the promotion materials.

It is CARB compliant for California market giving it a good use rating for construction and recreation use.In making this standard the fuel tank is well sealed and doesn’t have a vent for operation. This can cause a vacuum on the tank and restrict fuel flow to the engine. When operating if lid is slightly loosened just enough for air to pull through it can prevent this. A cap with an added vent could be an improvement for this issue.

In addition the tank can pressurize during the change from cold to hot conditions.

Oil needed is the standard 10W-30 oil for crane shaft at 1.16 qts. and no mixing is required for the 4 stroke engine. We find this an odd design that the required oil be slightly more than one quart or liter. For temperatures below 0 degrees Fahrenheit a 5W-30 oil is recommended. If used in hot climates where temps will be above 75 to 80 degrees on a continuous basis then a 10W-40 SAE oil is recommended.

The engine does come with an oil sensing system for automatic shutoff on low oil..

We appreciate the fact that CPE accounts for high altitude use and the manufacture can provide main jets to compensate for altitudes greater than 3500 feet.

This generator has a noise level of 74DBA at 23 feet. This is loud compared to other models that manage noise levels at 70 and below. This may not be the best model to consider for residential use unless you have the ability to block noise. For commercial/ industrial use it should be in the basic background noise for such sites.

Dimensions and Weight

The Champion-Power-Equipment 41135 portable generator has overall dimensions of 31.3 X 20.9 X 22 inches (L x W x H) and it weighs in at 185.9 lbs. This makes this generator a little big and heavy, but with its 8 inch never flat wheels and handle it is still easy to move.

The single handle does appear on the flimsy side, but seems to work well enough. One customer commented that the rubber hand grip came off and he had to contact cement it back on.

Typical Uses and Needs

The Champion-Power-Equipment 41135 gas powered portable generator is a dependable generator to have at home in times of power outages.

For 120V needs you’ll be able to get 4800W of continuous power. It can easily run all the essential electrical equipment in your home like lights, TVs, sump pumps, refrigerator and furnace fan all at the same time.

At the same time with it being portable it can also be used outdoors while camping or used to run electric equipment in your RV. It is also a useful piece of equipment for running power tools at a job site where there is no electricity available. Display & Control Panel, Start-up

CPE 411356 Control PanelThe control panel of the Champion-Power-Equipment 41135 generator is very clear and easy to follow.

When you face the generator to the very left you have the On/Off switch, next to this switch you have 4 circuit breakers which protect the generator in case of overload. Limiting total amps to 25 on each circuit and 20 amps to each duplex plug set. Allowing use of all plugs. As noted previously one ciricut provides power to each N5 duplex set and the combined circuits get 240V to the L14 twist lock plug.

Next to this you have the voltmeter which lets you know the voltage that the generator is putting out at all times.

Next to the voltmeter you have the 120V/ 240V 30 amp twist lock receptacle. To the right of this receptacle you have four duplex plugs providing 120V AC receptacle pair with 20 amp single phase power and then you have the ground terminal.

Start up

The engine of the 41135 generator uses a recoil system for starting, here are the steps to be taken to start the generator.

  1. Make sure that the generator is on a flat level surface.
  2. Disconnect all the electrical loads from the generator.

  8. If the engine does not start on the first pull of the recoil starter, move the choke lever to the Run position for the next three pulls.
  9. If the engine starts but does not run, check to see that the generator is on a flat surface. This generator is equipped with a low oil level sensor that prevents the engine from running when the oil level falls.

Shut down

  1. Turn Off and unplug all electrical loads.
  2. Let the generator run at no load for a few minutes.
  3. Turn the fuel valve to the Off position.
  4. Let the engine run till it stops due to lack of fuel.

Consumer Comments

The Champion-Power-Equipment 41135 generator commands a respectable 4.5 stars out of 5 on the Amazon ratings. The customers who bought this generator were very satisfied with its performance.

General the customers provide feedback that goes to how reliable this generator is, as well as commenting that price is great for its size range. Many indicate they would buy it again. Some have commented how it exceeded their expectations.

With low loading one customer was really surprised to find out that after running it overnight that it only used half a tank of gas.

One concern that a user had was with on a 4 day outage where it was hot, actually really hot that the generator was not affected and delivered when they needed it most.

Noise: Most commented that noise level was similar or higher compared to other models in this size range.

Fuel economy and tank fill: Was better than expected/published. However the gas fill was a bit awkward and must be done a slow rate or with an adequate funnel. One guy used an old quart oil bottle with the bottom cut out which worked well for him.

Because of the CARB compliance the fuel tank is well sealed and therefore can draw a vacuum when gas is consumed and end up starving the engine for fuel.

Power needs: Generally this size provides the majority of owners with the power they need to keep household appliances running. Typically they are running at about half load and enjoying the fuel economics. One user did experience issues with loads over 2000W, but didn’t provide background on elevation or other considerations.

Assembly: Generally can be completed in 20 minutes, with easy assembly of wheel kit, vibration mount, handle and adding oil.
