Briggs Stratton 40301 7000W Empower Standby Generator

Briggs Stratton 40301 7000W Empower Standby Generator

The Briggs and Stratton 40301 7,000 watt Empower Natural gas/ liquid propane powered air cooled standby generator is one of the products that they market with a commercial engine that is specifically made for years of reliable standby power. Briggs & Stratton is a well known name when it comes to small engines and power equipment. They have been in the market for over a hundred years and have specifically designed small engines for various uses.

The Briggs and Stratton 40301 generator can run on either natural gas or propane and can be connected to your main source of fuel. This generator can supply you with 7000 watts of continuous power with liquid propane as fuel or 6,000 watts of continuous power with natural gas as fuel. It makes it an ideal generator to run a small to medium house or to power your essentials in a bigger home during power outages. It is a fully automatic operation once installed with a matching automated transfer switch.

This unit is CARB compliant.

Note that this unit is being discontinued and is now replaced by model 40351.

Power Output and Generation

Briggs Stratton 40301 Engine

Briggs Stratton 40301 Engine

The Briggs & Stratton 40301 7,000 watt Empower Natural gas/ Liquid Propane powered air cooled home standby generator has a 504 cc single cylinder air cooled engine which lets it deliver 6,000 watts of continuous power when running on natural gas and 7,000 watts of continuous power when running on Liquid Propane.

The standby generator is designed to be only installed with a transfer switch. The manual indicates that you should only use Briggs & Stratton Power Products UL approved transfer switches or you will void your generator warranty. This is very presumptuous on B&S’s part. We have to ask why wouldn’t other UL approved transfer switches be acceptable. However, because there is certain communication that must take place between the switch and the generator it would make a lot of sense to stick with their products.

There are no external plugs on the unit and all wiring is through the transfer switch.

Output is 58.2 amps at 120V and 29.1 at 240V. which is just about 7000 watts. Each 120V circuit has a 30 amp circuit breaker. These standby generators use advanced alternator control technology to ensure stable power for sensitive electronics.

Surge capacity is 3000 plus watts depending on which fuel is being utilized.

Fuel Type and Noise Levels:

The Briggs & Stratton 40301 generator can use either natural gas or liquid propane as a fuel source. It can be connected to your main house hold supply of propane or natural gas which means that it will always have the fuel available to run it.

This generator can produce 6,000 watts of continuous power running on natural gas and 7,000 watts of continuous power when running on liquid propane.

Noise:

There is conflicting information in regards to the 7kW generator, the sales page indicates that is got a enclosure with acoustic foam dampeners, air passages design for quiet operation, an exhaust system with automobile quality. and makes claims of 50-% quieter operation than most portables. On the other hand the available manuals indicate that it is on the loud side producing 81 Db of noise at 23 ft. when running at full load. One user indicates that it really is quieter than his portable.

It is likely that the manuals have not been updated to the latest model improvements so may be out of date.

Dimensions and Weight

The Briggs & Stratton 40301 generator has overall dimensions of 32 x 34.25 x 28.5 inches ( L x W x H ) this makes this generator very compact and it weighs in at 280 lbs.

Since it is a direct connect to natural gas or liquid propane there is no additional weight or bulk added to the generator.

The unit comes with a gray painted rust proof automotive paint giving it the needed durability for outdoor installation.

Typical Uses and Needs

The Briggs & Stratton 40301 7,000 watt Empower generator is a home standby generator delivering 6kW or 7kW of continuous power on natural gas or liquid propane respectively.

This generator is an ideal backup source for power to run a small to mid sized household or to power essential electrical appliances in a larger home during power outages. This is an automatic generator which turns itself on automatically when it senses the loss of electrical power. It can be connected to your main source of natural gas or liquid propane so that you do not have to worry about running out of fuel.

Display & Control Panel, Start-up

The control panel of the Briggs & Stratton 40301 generator is located inside the generator housing. Depending on model year the layout may be arranged differently. Here is one such configuration from the 7kW manual.

When you look at the control panel you will find these items: it has a circuit breaker located to the left which controls the output of the generator. Nearby you have a 15 amp fuse which protects the DC control circuits. Prominently on the panel is the system switch which is the most important control on this generator; it has an “Auto” position and an “Off” position. The Auto position is the normal operating position for this switch. The OFF position is used to turn off a running generator and is used to reset any detected faults.

The Manual Over ride is a separate switch, it is used to manually start and stop the generator. Additionally you have a button to Set Exercise cycle for the generator.

Your unit comes with a Digital Display which displays the running time in hours or it displays the fault codes. On some units these faults are provided on a remote with LED lights.

Fault codes include: Transfer Switch Fault, Low Oil Shutdown, Low Frequency, Low Voltage, Low Battery Voltage, Oil Temp High, Fail to Start, and Engine Over-speed.

Start up

Auto Start

The Briggs & Stratton 40301 generator is equipped with sensors that constantly monitor the utility power source voltage. When the System switch is in the Auto position and the sensors detect a drop in voltage below a certain level, the control board will signal the generator. (Must be matched with a compatible transfer switch.

Manual Start

To manually start the generator set the System switch to the Auto position. Check to see that the circuit breaker is in the On position. Push and hold the Manual Over ride switch till the engine starts.

Shut down

Auto

When the control sensors detect that power has been restored by the utility company the generator automatically switches the power to the utility company and it signals the engine to shut down.

Manual Shut down

To manually shut down the generator move the circuit breaker to the OFF position then push and hold the Manual Over ride switch till the engine stops.
