Briggs & Stratton 30550 3500 Watt Portable Generator Review

The Briggs & Stratton 30550 3500 watt gas powered portable generator is just one of the generators produced by Briggs and Stratton and is specifically design for use with RVs.

They are known worldwide for their small engines and power equipment. This company has been serving the needs of people for over 100 years. Along with the other power equipment they also manufacture generators powered by their long lasting and durable engines.

Power Output and Generation

The Briggs and Stratton 30550 gas powered portable generator is equipped with a Briggs and Stratton 1150 series OHV 250 cc engine which lets it produce 3,500 watts of continuous power while being able to surge up to 4375 watts.

This unit comes with a (TT-30) RV outlet @120V-30 amp and you have a the standard 120Volt 5-20R at 20 amp duplex receptacle. We did find listing for this unit which is incorrectly calling out the RV outlet as a twist lock and 240V, it is not.

TT20 and 10-30R

TT30 don’t confuse with the 10-30R

At 3500W the RV outlet is rated for 3600W.

Fuel Type and Noise Levels:

The Briggs and Stratton 30550 gas powered portable generator uses gasoline as its fuel. It has a metal fuel tank with a capacity of 4 gallons which lets it run for 8 hours at 50% load capacity. This makes this generator a very efficient generator.

They do not publish noise levels for this unit, claiming no industry standard to do so. I find this to be a guise to hide behind when your units are loud. Most manufactures will at least give you a dB level at 7 meters to allow for some comparison.

Generally speaking reviews indicate that it’s a very loud machine. This is likely due to the open frame configuration providing significant mechanical noise. Most users were not specific to muffler, but with the CARB aspect, the muffler should work fairly well.

Dimensions and Weight

The Briggs and Stratton 30550 portable generator has overall dimensions of 22.5 x 26 x 18 inches ( H x L x W ) and it weighs in at 133 lbs.

Add another 36lbs for a full tank of gas.

Though this generator is not lightweight it is a very compact generator for its size.

Note: we did find that the 30550- 01 model may have a different frame size and be 22 inches wide.

Typical Uses and Needs

The Briggs and Stratton 30550 is designed to provide 3500 watts of continuous output while being able to surge up to 4375 watts. That is to say that for short durations you can use the full output adjusted for environmental factors.

This generator has a fuel tank capacity of 4 gallons which lets it run for 8 hours at 50% load capacity. It is equipped with 7 inch never go flat tires and a fold up handle which makes it easy to move it around.

It comes with a TT-30 120V outlet which makes it an ideal generator to use in your RV for your electrical needs. We would caution that with the noise levels reported by user that some consideration should go into blocking the noise or where it may be used.

This generator produces sufficient power so that it can be used as a backup power source for minor appliances in your home during power outages utilizing about 20 amps of output. With an TT to L5 adaptor you could use additional power on larger appliances.

It is CARB compliant and available in all 50 states. Being portable means that you can take this generator wherever you need electrical power. You could also use at a job site to power your tools and lights.
